Strawbale Studio posted its activities on Natural Awakenings,  Sustainable Detroit Network,

Green Building.com, Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center website and of course, the

Strawbale Studio listerve & website.

Regional Building Projects

Connections were made with other regional Strawbale Homes projects: Joe Trumpey, a U of M professor, built a strawbale home by Ann Arbor; Connie & Don Barlow, who trained at the Kensington Kids Cottage, are now building their own strawbale home in Mason, MI by Lansing; Christina Snyder & Chris Coon are beginning their sustainable homestead by Manchester, MI; Lansing architect Fred McLaughlin is planning his beautiful home & office near downtown Lansing.  Information on these structures has been posted on the Strawbale Studio website Links page.

Potential consultations & workshops: A number of people have sought advice and workshop

leadership to create small regional buildings: Grass Lake Sanctuary (sustainable bungalows),

Ann Arbor City Chicken (natural building chicken coops),  Mike Zuberla with Toledo Grows Program

(natural building chicken coop or garden shed), Upland Hills CSA (playhouse and tool shed) and

Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center ( natural building wall & seating area).  Dr. Bob Piazimenti

is interested in an Earth Oven Workshop for the Ferndale, MI community. Jen & Lance Bowen

suggest a connection with the Detroit Waldorf School.  Architect Bob Theis inquires about thatching

in relationship to natural building being done on Native Reservations. The Oakland TransitionTown

is looking into a local "Re-skilling Day" in which the Strawbale studio would participate. Lisa Simons

wants to schedule the Sierra Club for a tour or workshop in 2009. A natural building gathering is being

planned to design a "Small Regional Structure", whose building details could be applied to a wide

variety of small buildings: cabins, sheds, small homes.  These potential connections will be further

explored next year.

Sustainable Teacher Education: The concept of  “teaching teachers” using the

Global Ecovillage Model developed by Deanne Bednar, is being discussed with Danielle Conroy,

Executive Director of the Raisin River Institute, & Dr. Rebecca Martusewicz, SEMIS Coalition Director,

Eastern Michigan University (Carol Fink’s connection at Bioneers Detroit).

Creative Project:

An article, “Imaginal Cells: A Metaphor of Social Transformation” was written & illustrated by Deanne

Bednar in 2009 for the Upland Hills Ecological Center's publication, “The Ecologic”.  It was well-

recieved & the Adrian Dominican Sisters requested the printing of 200 copies for their studies, stating

that the article is "perfect to offer analogy with physical, spiritual and social transformations that are

included (in our services)".  A "Imaginal Cell" song was also created for the Gaia Women singing group.

Additional Information about ongoing events such as foraging & sustainable living skills is available in the 2008 End-of-Year Report.
