OXFORD KID'S COTTAGE

Four hundred bundles of reed grass (Phragmites) were applied to the roof, the ridge was covered with locally gathered cattails and finished with a traditional decorative pattern made with thin poles from the maple trees on the property. Several stemwall systems were constructed:  the north & south sides are a cavity wall made of local fieldstone & cement mortor, insulated with "lava rock" ( pumice stone).  the west stem wall is made of dry laid "urbanite" (broken peices of recycled concrete sidewalk) chinked with cob (earthen mix) on the interior and a lime plaster on the exterior. Some of the window frames & windows were installed.

The SPIRAL CHAMBER

This small wattle & daub building received additional thatching and earth plasters.  Wattle & Daub is technique that has been used throughout the world, and throughout time.  Local, hand-made materials such as cording, round poles, sticks, mud, sand and straw make this a very enjoyable and friendly style of construction !

The LOG LOFT

This storage structure in the east wing of the main house was finished, complete with a sleeping mattress atop of this storage unit and shelves below, creating additional sleeping and storage space for interns and visitors.  It is made entirely with round poles from the land, primarily dead ash trees that were killed by the Emerald Ash Borer.  The loft and hand-made ladder are joined together with notching & lashing.

The Smiling Sun EARTH OVEN

was constructed in 2009, initiated by intern Sam Runner and built with the help of other interns & the Teen Builders.. We have had magnificent pizzas cooked in this fine wood-fired oven utilizing the sour dough recipes of Mike Ross, who is becoming a natural builder after taking classes at the Strawbale Studio.  Mike took the photos at our 2 Day Earth Oven Workshop in 2009.
