Full size pizza oven under construction 1/4 scale demo oven: The Turtle
Bread in minutes! Pizzas in 90 seconds! Pitas in 10 seconds! These are some of the feats that a well built oven, made from the clay rich soil beneath our feet can do! Earth ovens have been around for centuries in a variety of cultures and they still are. The relative simplicity of constructing an efficient, long lasting earth oven is unknown to most people. Join Deanne and Sam for 2 days of digging our hands in the dirt and learning to build an earth oven from the natural materials in your immediate surroundings.
SITE: The Strawbale Studio land, outside Oxford, MI, is on 50 rural wooded acres one hour north of Detroit. Tour of the grounds includes the Strawbale Studio, Oxford Kid's Cottage, the Spiral Chamber, Rocket Stove Heated Bench and Sam's Earth Oven and the demonstration "Turtle Oven".
LEARNING:
The workshop will teach you Materials Harvesting, Cob Mixing, Stone Laying, Earth Oven Insulation, Door & Dome Construction, Artistic Potential.
FORMAT: By the second day, we'll have a "temporary oven" to bake in, and a more permanent oven to finish. We start working at 10 am, and are done by 6 pm. We will end the day with pizza served from the Earth Oven, and local greens salad !
FEES: $75 per person for these 2 days of hands-on learning and pizza made in the Earth Oven. For those with limited, low, or fixed incomes, we can and do reduce fees; please inquire.
WHAT TO BRING:
Food to share...whatever you have around ( a bag of potatoes, fruit, grain, or whatever) and we will make meals together. Bring special things you like as well, such as coffee or tea.
A notebook and pen.
Recommended: The Earth Oven Book by Kiko Denzer. We have this book available on site for $15.
