Natural Building Series Part 6:   Intro to Strawbale Construction.

July 12 & 13, 2008  10am - 4pm  Included in 10 day course above.

Learn how to create a breathable structure with strawbales & mud plasters. Strawbale construction with r 40 rating, provides superior insulation from the cold or heat.  You will get a sense of this when you tour the Strawbale Studio with its thick wall, and the  thermal mass of its earthen plasters.  It is very cool and comfortable in the summer.  Strawbale construction is also user-friendly, can be curved, sculpted to some degree, and is quite a simple wall system for the novice.  It has strong aesthetic qualities as well.

In this workshop you will

  • learn the basic Design Principles of Strawbale
  • Install & stabilize a strawbale wall.
  • Frame up a window
  • Apply earthen plasters to the strawbales.
  • and see the Strawbale Studio & Rocket Stove Heated Bench.

Optional potluck, evening video & overnight.

Instructor: Deanne Bednar Bio
