Legislation concerns re: Nutritional Suppliments

From the Energy Times, January 2007:

S.3546 The Dietary Supplement and Nonprescription Drug Consumer Protection Act passed under "controversial and suspicious circumstances."

Background:

I have not researched this, but if true, this is serious stuff. My understanding from the article is that the bill makes it legal for people with serious health effects to blame their supplement even if the supplement did not cause the outcome. You may want to look into this more. The quote below is not stated quite how I would put it, but you will get the idea.

My understanding is that the bill had been defeated 2 times, and then was apparently defeated again in a voice vote, taken at 3 am in the morning, when most of those opposed had gone home. A head count was requested, legally allowed to last only 5 minutes, which was extended -- until the number of votes were there to pass the new legislation.

From the article:

"S.3546 is the first step towards the FDA fully regulating supplements. But really, the FDA has enough problems -- for example, synthetic drugs cause 100,000 deaths annually while hospitalizing millions. Do we really need the FDA regulating safe, beneficial supplements? Of course not. Supplements are the solution to America's health problem. The FDA has no business regulating what is ours by birthright.

Nutritional supplements are a legacy from God. AER not only violates our freedom as Americans, it violates our rights as humans living in a natural world. Nature has an inherent ability to create, perpetuate and enhance life, and science has proven that thousands of plants have healing powers.

As pharmaceutical drugs falter and healthcare costs skyrocket, these healing plants take on greater significance -- as an affordable, natural and safe means of establishing good health both in the present and for future generations. We must protect this legacy at all costs.
