Letters from Interns

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 8 months ago

Rachel, who volunteered during the summer of 2008 on the Oxford Kid's Cottage moved on to California to attend an ecological program at Humbolt College.  7/20/08 Rachel writes to Deanne and Intern, Amber:

Dear Deanne and Amber,

How are you two doing? How is your summer progressing? I thought of you

all last night for the full moon. I am on the organic farm in Hoopa,

California and have been for almost 2 weeks now. I really love it. I am

learning so much. Right at the moment I am sitting on the porch of the

cabin in the sunshine with a big mug of tea. There are apple trees nearby

and a chicken, too. I have been down at the river for the past hour or so

before returning, eating blackberries on the way, and hanging out some

clothes to dry on a line. It is such a beautiful, simple life. Saturdays

are our days off. Linda and Grady, the farm owners, are gone all day into

town at the Farmer’s Market and there are five of us kids here on the farm

that are currently ‘interning.’ We all wake up ridiculously early even

today because we are so used to getting up before 6am. But it is so

beautiful in the early morning before the sun is even up. We all sit

around drinking a pot of coffee and working on crossword puzzles.

The farm is great and very involved in community, CSA’s, food banks and

everything. I have been making a few trips into the town where the

university is, working on student loan processes and searching for housing

and whatnot. Sometimes I get frustrated and I don’t even want to bother or

think about it but I have to. I have about a month till I start school

August 25th. Luckily time goes slow on the farm. There are black bear

around here, too. This morning we had to help the neighbours fix a fence

that a bear climbed over last night to get to the apricot trees!

I’m working on my resume to apply for some jobs with the forestry service

and the national parks and whatnot.

How are things going with all the projects? Did you ever get your photos

uploaded somewhere? You should really make a Flickr account! I would love

to see them.

I miss you all!!!

Love, Rachel
