TOOL REPAIR & SHARPENING with John Eisley. Learn from a Master.
John Eisley, 2nd generation stone mason, will be sharing from his life-time experiences working with hand tools ! (Emily Eisley's dad) The class will include a brief intro to tool maintenance, the basics of identifying good steel, how steel is made, different types of edges, saftey, sharpening & repair principles for knives, axes, shovels & more. Bring a hand tool you would like to fix or sharpen, if you wish. $25 prepaid 1 week in advance. $35 at the door with RSVP. Some scholarships avaiable. Limited Class size. It's nice to spend time in this space. 4 - 5p Mini-class on Knot Tying ~ Learn several very useful knots: handle lashing, box lashing, tripod lashing, millers knot and clove hitch. Henna Party lead by local henna artist Sandy Rippetoe.
Enjoy an enchanting & relaxing evening with Henna expert, Sandy Ripetoe who will share henna history, application, traditions & crafts. Participants will receive a henna cone, info sheet, design sheet, and practice sheet. There will be a hands-on demo period where you can play with the henna and ask questions/get instruction. If you wish, Sandy will apply a henna design on you ! Additional cones will be available for purchase, as well as some henna-inspired upcycled items and other goodies. We will take a break in the middle of the class for a Tour of the Strawbale Studio, enchanting natural buildings with thatched roofs, earth oven, and more. Optionally, you can stay indoors and check out the Sustainability Library or play with henna. Class limit 15. Fee $25 prepaid or $35 at the door withRSVP & Registration

Held at the Strawbale Studio, outside Oxford, MI on wooded rural land. In this unique class you will learn what you need to know to getting started on youw own mushroom cultivation: types and principles of growing, log selection, inoculation, choosing the location, and where to get spores for your future mushroom adventure ! During this indoor & outdoor class, there will be both lecture & hands-on time. Participants will inoculate a log to take home, and help construct an outdoor crib stack, column culture, and "Garden Giant" mushroom bed. There will be mushroom kits and plug spawn available from easygrowmushrooms.com. Bring your own bag lunch. $75 at door with RSVP or $65 Early Bird Special - paid by March 29. Class limit of 15. Natural Building Essentials: Building With Cob
May 11th – 16th, 2013
Woodbury, TN
This workshop is a comprehensive introduction to all the basic skills involved in constructing any cob building. In this workshop we will build a stone foundation for a cob building, mix cob both by foot and with equipment, build cob walls, install window and door frames, learn about roofs for cob buildings and much more. This is an excellent course to take if you want to get started in natural building and it will prepare you to build your own basic cob projects. Many people have successfully built their own small cottages after taking this class. For a more in depth experience with all of these techniques and more, you can stay an additional 8 days for the complete owner builder training course (listed below).

Building the Complete Cob and Timber Cottage

This fourteen-day building intensive will offer a complete introduction to all the skills you’ll need to complete a cob cottage from the foundation to the roof. This workshop offers a unique blend of construction experience in the fundamentals of building cob walls as well as equally important but frequently overlooked details such as plasters, floors, living roofs, and electrical.
You will also learn all the fundamentals of building load bearing cob walls, including designing and building a foundation, choosing materials, mixing cob by foot and with equipment, building walls, design and structural principals. The instructors will also guide us through the practical and theoretical aspects of building a round timber roof for our cob cottage. Timber will be harvested on site, peeled, cut and assembled into a roof during this workshop. More Information

Womens' Natural Building Apprenticeship, Check out this three-month program to be held in southwest New Hampshire, taught by Liz Johndrow and Sarah Highland.
