John,

I learned about your network through the Michigan DEQ website. I am a member of the Detroit Chapter USGBC Green Schools Committee, which is just getting underway and I volunteered to help with curriculum ideas for and presentations to K-12 schools and see that there are many valuable resources that have already been developed. Could you please put me on your email list?

Thank you!

John,

I wonder if I could ask for your input? The USGBC Green Schools Advocacy Committee I am on has received an invitation to be involved with Teacher Day at the Henry Ford (see information below). I was hoping to offer a possible hands-on learning idea, as they suggested, but am not sure what that would be to appeal to a such broad range of grade levels. Perhaps a list of websites that teacher's might use or possibly handouts? Or a computer link to websites that teachers could look at? Perhaps your Network already has something that could be used here? I would appreciate any feedback you could give. Thank you!

Peggy Matta

Teacher Appreciation Day:

The Henry Ford sponsors two Teacher Appreciation Days each year to introduce K-12 and homeschool educators to our programs and services as well as to thank them for their work.  We offer free admission to teachers in the 6 county metro area as well as to their guest that day for all of our venues.  There is an overview program in the morning at the museum's Anderson Theater and then the teachers are free to spend their day visiting all of The Henry Ford's venues - IMAX, FRFT, Museum, and Village - and experiencing samples of our programs.  Basic event information is announced here:  http://www.thehenryford.org/education/development.aspx

How Many Educators:

About 800 educators attended our September event at The Henry Ford with about 400 of those coming to the Rouge.

Outreach Opportunity at the Rouge:

I would love to host members of the USGBC Detroit Chapter at the Visitor Center to give a program on the Green Schools initiative as well as provide information on how educators could participate in Greening the Heartland and other chapter activities.  We could also offer basic information from you at the FRFT table that we host in our IMAX lobby that day so that we reach both teachers who have time for a full session at the Rouge and those who opt to only see the Museum or Village that day.

The teachers arrive throughout the day at the Rouge from about 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM.  You'd have a range of opportunities from simply staffing an informational table, or what I think would be more effective, offering a few targeted presentations of 10 - 20 minutes or so.  If you have a hands-on learning idea that we could offer that would be wonderful as well.  I've just begun exploring adding hands-on components to our outdoor Living Laboratory Tour for this Spring and Summer so we are very open to ideas.  We would need to develop a specific session description by late February so that it could be published on our teacher website and in our print materials.  Session handouts could be provided as a PDF link on our website or as traditional paper handouts at the session.

A few years ago, John Sarver's office funded an online Sustainability

Education Handbook for K-12 teachers and it is available at

www.urbanoptions.org/SustainEdHandbook

There is much there, including a free workbook on energy efficiency and

renewables (bottom left) and lots of listing of curricula.  I also

suggest you look at www.facingthefuture.org which has some free

downloadable curricula.  Plus the MI DEQ has a good curricula for middle

schoolers in water, energy etc.

For a good and easy hands on project, have students build solar cookers

to cook and clean water.  Free plans are available at

www.solarcooking.org .  My favorite is the cookit.

Also look at the K-12 resources at

http://www.uspartnership.org/main/show_passage/48 from the U.S.

Partnership.
