Natural Building ~ the Art of Thatching
Saturday, January 24, 2009. 10a - 4p
Thatching is an ancient art using local plant material for covering the roof instead of shingles. When Phragmites (Water Reed) are used, a roof in Europe is expected to last 50 to 75 years ~ when thatched by a Master in good conditions. Thatched roofs are considered warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and are, of course, uncommonly beautiful!
In this workshop you will have the opportunity to tour several thatched roof structures on this beautiful land outside Oxford, Michigan (about one hour north of Detroit). You will also see a brief thatching demonstration & a video on thatching before we go to a local reed field to harvest the phragmite.
Come prepared to spend several hours outside if you choose to do the reed collecting segment. Warm boots and socks, snow pants, or several layers of sweat pants, gloves, hat. Often it is so warm when we are working that we take off our coats, but other times staying warm is a challenge, so please be prepared so we can all enjoy the day.
Bring a sack lunch for yourself. We will eat around 12:30 pm before we go to the reed field. Consider bringing a snack and some hot liquid in a thermos for our outdoor harvesting section. By the way, harvesting is a fun activity, and not too energetic, but rather a patient ongoing excercize. Bundles collected will be used for thatching future buildings on the site. If you want to keep a bundle of course you may!
Optional pm potluck & overnight, if you wish to stay for the
