Week-long Thatching Workshop:
creating an all natural, local roof!
Note that this includes workshop # 6
June 12 – 18, 2008 Thursday through Wednesday.
Learn a full range of basic thatching skills in this week-long workshop on beautiful wooded and rural land one hour north of Detroit. Come together with other folks interested in sustainability, and help create a beautiful, all natural roof made from local reed.
By the end of the week you will have been exposed to the skills needed to thatch your own simple roof.
In the workshop you will learn how to
- design & construct a thatched roof
- prep the round-pole roof structure
- visit a Phragmite (reed grass) field
- identify good reed
- learn where to find them & how to get permission to harvest
- clean & prepare bundles
- apply the reed to the roof & ridge.
- view thatching/natural building videos & resources.
Additionally you will learn the basics of earthen plastering !
- identify proper soils
- where to find the soils
- how to mix & apply Earthen Plasters on the Rocket Stove Heated Bench!
Optional: Leave on Wednesday afternoon,
or stay on for the Full Moon Bonfire Wednesday night & leave on Thursday.
