What is the Detroit "Open Green Map" ?

The Detroit Green Map has joined the Green Map System in their "Open Source" mapping process which is linked with Google Earth.  This allows individuals the opportunity to suggest sites to an evolving map, and makes the process of promoting sustainable sites much easier and more accessable.

Currently there is a  "Detroit City" Green Map & a "Detroit Metro" map.

Detroit Open Green Map reports from the Detroit Bioneers

October 16-18, 2009

Several steps were taken at the Bioneers Detroit Conference toward the Green Map process:

Friday October 16, 2009 a formal meeting was held from 9:30 - 11:30 ~  with founding director of the Green Map System, Wendy Brawer from NYC, and an initial group of folks from Wayne, Monroe and Oakland County ~  to explore our potential relationships with an evolving Open Source Green Map for

Detroit and this region of Michigan.

Friday through Sunday, an exhibit table was set up with information about the mapping process, and Wendy "personed" the table on Friday. Many folks signed up during the weekend, indicating their interest in helping to further this process.

Friday Evening: An informal gathering   of those interested in the Green Map, was held at the Bioneers Reception in teh Art Gallery at Marygrove College.  A number of  folks meet with Wendy Brawer who is originally from Detroit.   "The world is watching Detroit", she reports from her travels around the world with the Green Map process. Below is a pic of a few folks at that gathering.

Detroit Green Map ACTIVITES

Following the Bioneers Conference Green Map activites, we have met as an expanding map-making team.  Wendy Brawer has come to two of our meetings so far this year.  2010 Meetings include:  January 22 "Tutorial",  February 1 "With Wendy at WARM Training Center", February 4,  "Oakland County Subgroup meets with Oakland County Planning & Economic Development Services".  Behind the scenes we are updating our websites, learning technical skills, asking questions, reaching out for site suggestions and partners.   Upcoming:  Plans are being made to attend the US Social Forum in Detroit, June 22-26, 2010 where we can meet with Green Map makers from around the country.  April 23-25, Green Map Exhibit at MI Earthday Fest in Rochester, MI.  July 20 Oakland group presents on the Green map for Oakland County Natural Areas Advisory Committee.

Lots more has happened since then...Meetings, presentations.

This weekend the Green Map will have a table at the MI Earthday Fest in Rochester,  Michigan's largest earthday event. We will have a live computer with a projection screen, and folks can add sites to the Detroit Metro Open Source Green Map.
