During this workshop you will tour several thatched roof buildings, see a small demonstration, view 2 videos and try your hand at the thatching process.! Fee includes optional overnight stay & more hands-on experience if you wish to continue on Monday.

Thatching is a traditional skill used in most parts of the world to create a durable, beautiful, and all-natural roof system using plant material.
In this workshop you will
- Tour 3 thatched-roof structures on the land including the Strawbale Studio
- Learn the design principles of a thatched roof, and different types of roof designs & materials
- See a small demonstration of thatching on a ground frame.
- Learn how to locally collect, store & process the reed grass used to thatch (Phragmites)
- Receive hands-on instruction on how to process & apply the reed to the roof of a small structure
- Practice thatching and use some of the tools of the trade.
- View 2 videos on the techniques & history of thatching.
You are invited to stay overnight & continue to practice your thatching skills more on Monday.
Location: on rural land outside Oxford Michigan, 30 minutes north of Rochester.
Bring: A bag lunch, clothes suitable for rain or shine. Food to share if you are staying through Sunday.

Instructor: Deanne Bednar studied for 2 weeks with a Master Thatcher from Denmark in 1998 and since has helped to thatch the Strawbale Studio and lead the thatching of 2 other buildings including the Kensington Kids Cottage .She knows basic thatching skills and reed collecting strategies and has taught numerous people these primary skills ! She has written articles on her experience published in the book the "Art of Natural Building" & the "Permaculture Activist" magazine. Bio for Deanne
