Living & Building in Community
an 8 day Skillshop on the land. August 20 5pm - August 28, 4pm 2010
Learn to build a ROCKET STOVE heated bench, do finish earth plastering & try your hand at thatching.
Attend part or all of this workshop.
This event is located in a beautiful rural setting of woodlands, meadows & gardens
on the Strawbale Studio land outside Oxford, MI. One hour north of Detroit.
Learn hands-on natural building & sustainable living skills, while enjoying nature & the company of each other. Participate in current projects and receive instruction in a variety of skills and educational opportunities each day.
Main project: ROCKET STOVE Heated Bench construction in the Oxford Kids Cottage, a thatched roof, strawbale structure. Also included is hands-on experience of finished mixing and applying a finish EARTHEN PLASTER on the Strawbale Sauna & an opportunity to do basic THATCHING on the roof of a small structure.
Schedule** :
Friday night: Gathering & Thatching videos.
Saturday: Introduction to Rocket Stove Construction & earth mixing.
Sunday through Saturday: construction of stove firing chamber, earthen benches, thatching demo and hands-on, fermenting experiments, pizza fired in the earth oven, cooking in the solar oven and other components of sustainable living.
Special Event: Tuesday, August 24, 6 pm - 10 pm
FULL MOON Potluck & Bonfire for community & friends.

Deanne has created this event out of her enjoyment of being in direct relationship with local natural materials, co-creating within a community that supports each other~~ and the great fun of working together !
You will also experience:
- The Strawbale Studio - a thatched roof strawbale structure featured in books & magazines!
- The Smiling Sun Earth Oven
- A Rocket Stove Heated Bench~ experience the firing of a completed bench on site.
- A small greenhouse ~ provides food all year round with no added heat
- Some permaculture gardening examples.
- Several Strawbale & Wattle & Daub Structures with thatched roofs.
- Seasonal foraging on the land
- A wonderful media library on natural building, plants & sustainable living skills.
- Worm Composting, Solar Cooking, fermenting.
- Evening events include bonfires, videos on natural building & pizza in the earth oven !
** The schedule is dependent on weather and other factors, but there will be teaching experiences & opportunities to learn each day.
Fee & Registration* :

$600* for the course with registration & $50 non-refundable deposit.
$450* Early Bird Special ~ if prepaid in full by August
Includes lodging (some indoor bed & cots plus lots of outdoor camping space)
and shared meals (bring some food supplies if you can, and sign up to help with some meals & cleanup).
Pro-rated fee for attending part of the workshop.
Friday evening only $25.
