     The Strawbale Studio

    Natural Building & Sustainable Skills Program

      ~  joyfully re-weaving nature & people ~

In 2011 the Strawbale Studio provided


  • hands-on training ~  through classes, building projects, volunteer opportunities & a new Internship Program 
  • an experience of sustainable living ~  through tours of the buildings & grounds  week-Long work-shops, and concerts in the Strawbale Studio
  • projects & activities off site at regional sites and eco-fairs
  • education at other venues: Deanne  taught several regional classes, co-taught at Cob Cottage Co. in OR  &  Natural Building Colloqium East in NY,  & joined interns at local fairs. 
  • gathering of community & networking ~ through networking gatherings, monthly potluck/bonfire & fieldtrips to other regional eco-programs, fundraising events, & participation in Detroit Green Map team &The Oakland Country Transition Initiative
  • educational outreach ~ through the Strawbale Studio website, listserve and other forms of publicity locally and on the web.

Activities included 


  • The Oxford Kid’s Cottage rocket stove, perimeter trench/drywell, floor insulation, earth plasters
  • The Spiral Chamber,  finishing thatching . 
  • New Wood Shelter.  Lashed & notched pole structure, phase 1 of the living roof. 
  • Several "fort building" activities with students (Tall Trees Community Farm &Upland Hills School Fundraiser)
  • Fundraising Concerts in the Strawbale Studio




Continuing use of the Smilling Sun earth oven, winter greenhouse
