  • Spring 2012 - "Education & Community Outreach" includes Earthday festival, Green events and community projects, re-localization, earth oven, plasters, thatching, foraging and a permaculture class with Jared Bogdonov-Hanna. Hands-on construction of the Kids Cottage on site: stone knee wall, rocket stove heated bench, earthen floor & plastering, natural wall system construction and window framing & door building.  Join in projects with a highschool group who will be camping here for 5 days.  
  • Summer 2012 - Introductory building skills: foundation framing, natural walls systems, plasters, thatching, permaculture, foraging.
  • Fall 2012 - through November 15, 2012. Get hands-on experiences on our current building projects and sustainable skills.  Experiences Earth plastering. thatching, round pole framing skills and more. 

 

  • Winter 2013 - Jan 5 through February 6, 2013.  Reed collection, basics of thatching, exploration into pocket rocket stoves, using natural materials to retrofit exiting structures.  Do some earth plastering and round pole framing  & fermentation basics. 2013 Internship and Worktrade Activities  

     

  Spring & Summer Details  2013

  •  March 3 - April 3, 2013 (with a possibility of an extension) Tool Making Workshop, Reed Collecting, Thatching Demo,  help finish projects & prepare grounds & gardens for the season.  Evening design sessions on principles of designing & building foundations, wall systems, frames, and roofs. Some experiences in Earth Plaster & Cob.  Possible extension. Apprenticeship & Worktrade positions available. 
  • May 3 - June 3, 2013 Prepare for and participate in the Natural Building Essentials 2 week class, and help afterwards.   Openings for this month are the Internship at $650/$500 for the month, or $450 worktrade position (2 week workshop plus 2 days before & after). 
  • June  3 - July 3, 2013   Help with current natural building & gardening projects.  Evening presentations on natural building principles. Includes the Round Pole Framing 2 day workshop to create an outdoor kitchen at a farm in Clarkston, MI, and a Rocket Stove Workshop at the Strawbale Studio.  Apprenticeship & Worktrade positions available. 
  • July 1 - August 1, 2013   Prepare for and participate in the Strawbale Sauna & Timber Frame Gazebo 2 week class, and help a few days after. Openings for this month are the Internship at $650/$500 for the month, or $450 worktrade position (2 week workshop plus 2 days before & after). 
  • August 4 - September 24, 2013   Help finish current natural building & gardening projects.  Evening presentations on natural building principles.  Apprenticeship & Worktrade positions available.   Projects include the Hobbit Sauna living roof, interior cob wall & stemwall, earth plastering and the construction of a drywell.
  • September 24 - Oct 13 Worktrade postion in Tennessee with the  Natural Cottage Project.  $500 for 3 intensive weeks of natural building. See naturalcottageproject.com for details.
  • October 15 - November 17, 2013   Help finish current natural building & gardening projects.  Evening presentations on natural building principles. 

            Includes the Bioneers Detroit Conference & Strawbale Exhibit October 18-20, 2013.  Apprenticeship & Worktrade positions available. 

 

2013 FEE Details

There are 4 two-week classes listed on the Strawbale Studio Calendar. Two are in Michigan (in brown, above).   During these months there is no free worktrade positions. Rather, an intern can come in for the Internship Fee of $650 or $500 paid a month in advance.  Since these workshops will be an intensive experience with 4 instructors, there is no free position available during those times.  However, during the rest of the season there are both free worktrade and paying internship positions available.
